Challenge coins have a history that is rumored to have begun in Ancient Rome.
If a soldier performed well in battle, he would receive his typical day’s pay, and a separate coin as a bonus. Some accounts say that the coin was specially minted with a mark of the legion from which it came, prompting some men to hold on to their coins as a memento, rather than spend them.
The spirit of this tradition continues today in the fire service. When individuals or groups go above and beyond the call of duty, their valor is commemorated by receiving a coin designed by an officer of the department.
In honor of our community’s continued support, our officer team has designed a coin that can be purchased for $10 each. To get yours, stop by the fire station any time, and again, thank you for your support!
